SALISBURY, Md. – The
No. 19 Salisbury University softball team earned a key Capital
Athletic Conference doubleheader sweep on Saturday coming from
behind to take down York (Pa.) College 3-2 in extra innings in the
first game, and collecting a convincing 7-1 win in the second
game.
The Sea
Gulls did not lead in the first game until freshman Michelle Gravdahl (Ellicott City, Md.) drove a
fly ball to center field in the bottom of the eighth inning. The
fly ball was caught for the first out of the inning, but it was
deep enough to allow pinch runner Taylor Webb
(Federalsburg, Md.) to score the game-winning run on a
sacrifice fly.
The run
made a winner of junior Kelly
Leary (Severn, Md.), who worked all eight innings,
allowing just the two runs on six hits while striking out four.
Leary, with the help of her defense, was able to get out of a jam
in the top of the eighth as the Spartans (24-4, 5-3 CAC) were able
to get the potential go-ahead run to third base with no outs. Leary
got a groundball to second base where freshman Carly
Read (Baltimore, Md.) scooped up the ball and fired
home, gunning down the lead runner at the plate, preserving the 2-2
tie. Leary got a strikeout and a groundout to end the
threat.
In the
second game the Salisbury bats came to life. The Sea Gulls (21-2,
8-0 CAC) scored two unearned runs in the second inning, brought
home three runs in the third and plated two more in the fourth on a
two-run home run by senior catcher Lauren
Brenneman (York, Pa.). Read and senior first
baseman Ali Ritter (Belvidere, N.J.) each finished the game with
two hits.
Salisbury
starting pitcher Erika
Brittingham (Georgetown, Del.) earned the win,
scattering eight hits while not allowing a walk.
Salisbury
will travel twice this week to close out its CAC schedule. The Sea
Gulls will play a doubleheader at Gallaudet University on Tuesday,
April 6 and close out the CAC regular season with a doubledip at
University of Mary Washington on Saturday.
