NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – The
No. 3 Salisbury University softball team saw its 34-game winning
streak come to an end Friday with a 4-2, 10-inning loss to Messiah
College in the NCAA regional tournament hosted by Christopher
Newport University.
The game remained scoreless until the Falcons got on the board
with a single run in the top of the fifth inning off Salisbury
starting pitcher Kelly
Leary (Severn, Md.). Messiah added another run in the
sixth to take a 2-0 lead, but the Gulls bats came alive in the
bottom of the inning to tie the game.
The sixth-inning rally began with two outs when senior
Jen
Cahall (Elkton, Md.) came up with a single to center
field. Freshman Michelle
Gravdahl (Ellicott City, Md.) ripped a double, scoring
Cahall to cut the deficit in half and Gravdahl came home with the
game-tying run on a single by senior Amanda
DeMoine (Baltimore, Md.).
The game remained tied 2-2 until the 10th inning when the
Falcons got a two-run home run to break the deadlock.
Salisbury (34-3) got runners at the corners with two outs in the
bottom of the 10th, but Messiah pitcher Jessica Rhoads was able to
end the threat.
Rhoads and Leary each went the distance, with Rhoads collecting
16 strikeouts and Leary sitting down nine Falcon batters on
strikes.
Cahall and senior Ali Ritter
(Belvidere, N.J.) each finished with a team-high two hits on the
day for Salisbury.
The Sea Gulls will continue play in the regional on
Saturday when they face Frostburg State University in an
elimination game. After losing in the first round, the Bobcats
claimed a 5-3 win against Piedmont College on Friday. The game will
begin at 10 a.m., the winner will advance to a 4 p.m., game on
Saturday afternoon. The two teams met in Salisbury earlier this
season, with the Sea Gulls claiming a pair of 8-0 victories, one in
five innings, the other in six.
