McSweeney, No. 9 Wesley deal No. 10 Salisbury first loss, 23-14

Box Score

DOVER, Del. – Wesley College quarterback Shane McSweeney was 16-for-22 with 233 yards and one touchdown through the air and ran for 80 yards and one score on the ground as the Wolverines handed the No. 10 Salisbury University football team its first loss of the season, 23-14, at Miller Stadium Saturday.

The loss for Salisbury (7-1) is its seventh straight to ninth-ranked Wesley (7-1), which held the nation's highest scoring offense to 301 yards – its lowest output of the season – on a raw day on Delmarva. Strong winds and rain made for an uncomfortable game, featuring four fumbles, but no turnovers.

Trailing, 7-0, at the half, Salisbury junior Ross Flanigan ran for a 62-yard touchdown to knot the game at 7-7, just 1:54 into the third quarter.

Wesley responded on its next drive when McSweeney hooked up with Steve Koudossou for a 70-yard touchdown pass to put the Wolverines ahead, 14-7, with under 12 minutes left in the period.

Two Wesley drives later, the Wolverines added to their lead with a five-play, 45-yard march that culminated with an Askia Jahad 3-yard touchdown. The point after failed but Wesley had its first two-score lead of the day at 20-7 with 14:56 to go in the game.

The Gulls didn't quit as Dan Griffin found Juma Richards for a 52-yard touchdown pass to pull SU to within six points, punctuating a two-play drive that Nick Aloi jumpstarted with an 18-yard scamper from the Salisbury 30-yard line.

Wesley, though, found its way to the SU 14 in eight plays and Dan Tryon booted a 31-yard field goal to make it 23-14 with 10:19 to play and the Wesley defense made it stand, turning the Gulls over on downs.

Jahad carried the ball 17 times for 75 yards and a touchdown while three players had three catches for Wesley.

Griffin, who sustained an injury during SU's first drive of the day, returned to the game, finishing 3-of-10 passing for 75 yards and one touchdown as well as 13 rushes for 14 yards. Flanigan had a game-high 86 yards on the ground on five attempts.

Wesley opened the scoring when McSweeney barreled in from 2 yards with 7:44 left in the second quarter. The drive, which lasted 10 plays and 75 yards, was keyed by a 29-yard run by Koudossou.

Alex Akinseye led all players with 13 tackles while Chris Everett had 10. Matt Leon finished with nine stops and one of SU's two sacks on the day. Paul Gilstrop had 10 tackles for the Wolverines. Jeff Morgan tallied six tackles and 1.5 sacks for Wesley, as well.

SU hosts St. John Fisher College in its Homecoming game next Saturday, Nov. 5, at noon.
