Sea Gulls close regular season with tri-match sweep

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

SALISBURY, Md. – The Salisbury University volleyball team closed out the 2011 regular season with a tri-match sweep of Capital Athletic Conference foe Frostburg State University and Virginia Wesleyan College on Saturday at Maggs Physical Activities Center.

The Gulls (29-3) took down Frostburg first, 3-0 (25-12, 25-8, 25-17), to finish the season with a perfect 8-0 mark in the CAC, then closed the event with a 3-0 (25-18, 25-15, 25-10) win against Virginia Wesleyan.

Salisbury was nearly flawless in the opener against the Bobcats, hitting .405 in the match. Sophomore Sam Seifert led the way, registering a match-high 12 kills while hitting .455.

Junior Jenna Shay broke a 5-5 tie in the first set with one of her five kills in the match. The point sparked a 5-0 run as the Gulls would continue to pull away for the 1-0 lead.

After falling behind in the second set, 2-0, the Sea Gulls would mount another big run. This time Salisbury put together a 10-0 run, including a pair of kills from Seifert and junior Chelsea Glowacki. The Bobcats never got closer than six for the rest of the set.

The third set proved to be the closest of the match. After the Gulls opened with a 4-0 lead, Frostburg was able to keep things close, but in the end Salisbury's attack was too much, closing the match on a 9-4 run.

Glowacki finished the match with seven kills to go with six block assists while junior setter Carley Todd finished with 16 assists and senior setter Lindsey Saltzman had 15. Libero Michelle Meehan had a team-best 16 digs and four service aces.

Salisbury saw more of the same hitting success in its match against Virginia Wesleyan, hitting .360 as a team paced by Seifert and junior Kelly Vieira, who each had nine kills.

The Sea Gulls held a slight lead throughout much of the first set before one of Glowacki's four kills in the match sparked an 11-6 run to close out the first set. It was another late-set run that sent the Gulls to the final game up 2-0, as Salisbury rattled off a 9-4 run to close the second.

In the third set, the teams played closely until Meehan stepped to the service line and put away three aces to allow the Gulls to open up a six-point lead. Salisbury limited the Marlin attack with four blocks in the final set, led by Seifert and Glowacki, who each registered six block assists in the match.

Salisbury now turns its attention to the CAC tournament, which begins next week. The Gulls, the regular-season league champions, are the top seed in the event, and have earned a first-round bye. Salisbury will host a semifinal contest on Thursday, Nov. 3, against an opponent yet to be determined. Check www.suseagulls.com for more information, as it becomes available.
