NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – The Salisbury University volleyball team saw its 2011 season come to a close with a 3-0 (25-19, 25-16, 25-21) loss to Christopher Newport University in the NCAA Newport News Regional semifinal at the Freeman Center on Saturday.

Salisbury (32-4), which received five kills apiece from junior Kelly Vieira and sophomore Sam Seifert, finished the season with 30-plus wins for the third time in four years and fifth time overall. Freshman Michelle Meehan posted a game-best 17 digs for the Sea Gulls.

The Captains (35-4) never lost the lead in the first game but after a timeout, SU tied things at 16-16 with the help of a CNU error. Salisbury would score just three more points the rest of the way as CNU used a 9-3 run for the 1-0 lead.

CNU ran out to a 9-4 advantage in the second game and cruised to the win. SU got as close as four at 14-10, following a Captain error, but CNU was able to close on an 11-6 stretch.

Salisbury led 14-12 in the third game on a kill by junior Carley Todd, but CNU rallied to knot the game at 16 before taking the lead for good at 18-17 on a Bailey Jensen kill.

Cory Harris chipped in with nine kills for the Captains while junior Chelsea Glowacki had four and three block assists for the Gulls.

The loss for SU marks the final career match for senior Lindsey Saltzman, who led Salisbury with 10 assists.
