SU tops Stevenson, 66-57, for third consecutive win

SALISBURY, Md. – Sophomore Josie Hildebrand scored a game-high 14 points and added five rebounds to lead the Salisbury University women's basketball team to a 66-57 win over Stevenson University at Maggs Physical Activities Center on Saturday.

The win is the third consecutive for Salisbury (5-3, 3-0 CAC), which led from start to finish.

The Sea Gulls opened the game with 12-4 run, taking an eight-point lead six minutes in on a jumper by freshman Whitney Kolakowski.

The Mustangs (4-5, 0-3) rallied to knot the game at 14-14 when Daniela Poss knocked down a pair of free throws midway through the half, but junior Cinthia Ruiz hit a jumper from senior Meghan Dunn to cap a 9-1 SU run to restore a 23-15 lead with 6:55 remaining in the period.

Junior Katie McGahagan sank two from the line to give SU a 31-25 edge at the break.

A steal and jumper by Stevenson's Kayla Kelly moved the Mustangs to within 38-36 with 13:58 left but the Sea Gulls engineered a 13-0 run over 6:06 to open a 51-36 lead on a layup by KC Curran. The senior then added a three-pointer at the 5:43 mark to expand the lead to SU's largest of the day at 56-39.

Kyarra Harmon hit a layup inside the final minute to cut the lead to 63-57 but the Mustangs got no closer.

Freshman Anna Hackett was the only other player in double figures with 11 points. She also had five rebounds, three assists and a block. McGahagan finished with a game-high nine boards for the Sea Gulls, who outrebounded the Mustangs, 45-34, including 22-12 on the offensive glass, leading to 22 second-chance points.

Stevenson shot 22-for-54 from the field (40.7 percent) while Salisbury was 25-of-66 (37.8). The Mustangs had four more turnovers, 22-18. Daniela Poss paced the visitor with 12 points and six rebounds as the Mustangs dropped their third straight game.

SU travels to The College of New Jersey next Saturday for a 3 p.m., tip.
