McGahagan nets double-double as Sea Gulls fall to Mary Washington, 55-49

Box Score

SALISBURY, Md. – The Salisbury University women's basketball squad took the court on Saturday afternoon against Capital Athletic Conference opponent the University of Mary Washington, the team's fourth game in a string of eight CAC contests. Despite an incredibly strong second half for Salisbury, the Sea Gulls were unable to come back from a significant first-half deficit and suffered a 55-49 loss at the hands of the Eagles.

The match-up was tightly contested in the opening minutes of the game before the Eagles (16-5, 11-1 CAC) began to pull away, leading by as many as 14 points in the first half.  Sophomore guard Katie McGahagan netted six points in the first 20 minutes of the contest in addition to scooping up three rebounds. At the break, Mary Washington maintained a 30-17 lead.

The maroon and gold came out of the locker room with a renewed sense of determination, scoring four unanswered points (as part of a 7-2 run) to start off the second half. With minutes ticking off the clock, Mary Washington's lead slowly began to dissipate as the Sea Gulls (8-13, 5-7 CAC) found their offensive rhythm.

With less than four minutes left in the game, a pair of made free throws by senior guard Chante' McKinney brought the Sea Gulls to within nine points. With a last-minute Sea Gull effort in the works, the Eagles put the brakes on their offense in an effort to preserve the lead. Salisbury was forced to foul, and as time expired the scoreboard read 55-49 in favor of Mary Washington.

Junior guard Glen Charlton made her presence known in the second half, finishing with a team-high 14 points. McGahagan registered a double-double, netting a total of 11 points and pulling down a game-high 10 rebounds.

The Sea Gulls remain at home for their next two contests, beginning with a conference match-up against St. Mary's (Md.) College on Wednesday, Feb. 9. Tip-off is scheduled for 6 p.m.
