Box Score

SALISBURY, Md. – The Salisbury University men's basketball team picked up a 61-59 victory over No. 15 St. Mary's (Md.) College on Wednesday night in front of a raucous crowd of 551 in attendance at the Maggs Physical Activities Center.

The Sea Gulls (10-12, 5-8 Capital Athletic Conference) jumped out to a quick 6-0 lead in the first two minutes, which prompted the Seahawks (18-5, 12-2 CAC) to take a timeout. St. Mary's got on the board quickly out of the timeout, as Christian MacAuley vaulted into the air for an uncontested dunk off an assist from Alex Franz. The two teams continued to battle the rest of the first stanza, with St. Mary's jumping out to a seven-point lead following a made three-pointer by Franz. SU was able to cut the lead to three to close out the half, as senior center Chris McGrew and junior guard Mike Atkins each made a jumper to send the two teams into the locker rooms with St. Mary's holding a 34-31 lead.

Salisbury took its first lead of the second half at the 14:01 mark, as Atkins hit an open three-pointer off an assist from junior guard Devin Posey to give SU a 41-40 lead. Over the next five minutes, Salisbury would outscore St. Mary's 10-4, including a pair of three-pointers by senior guard David Pearman.

St. Mary's came storming back, as it would go on a 9-4 run over the next five minutes to cut the SU lead to 54-53 with 4:29 remaining the contest. The two teams would trade leads the rest of the way, until a steal by Posey would lead to an easy fast break layup with 2:06 left to give SU a 58-57 lead. Mazcko followed that up with a made three-pointer to push the Sea Gulls' edge to 61-57 with 49 seconds remaining. The Seahawks converted the first free throw of a one-and-one opportunity and SU got the defensive rebound on the the missed second try. Following an errant three-point shot by McGrew, the Seahawks pushed up the floor and fired off a made three-pointer with no time remaining on the clock inside Maggs, but an official had blown his whistle for a called timeout from the St. Mary's bench and put 1.4 seconds on the clock. Following a series of four timeouts, the Seahawks put the ball in play and misfired on a three-point attempt as time expired to give Salisbury the victory.

McGrew led the way for the Sea Gulls, as he scored a game-high 19 points and pulled down a team-high nine rebounds. Pearman totaled 16 points in the victory, while Maczko and Atkins each chipped in with 10 points.

St. Mary's got a stalwart performance from Sam Burum and Franz (nine rebounds), as they scored 16 and 15 points, respectively. Chris Hutchinson (10 points) was the final Seahawk to finish with a double-digit point total.

The Sea Gulls are set to host Frostburg State University this Saturday at 4 p.m. It marks the final regular season contest at the Maggs Physical Activities Center for seniors Chris Edwards, Eric Johnson, McGrew, Pearman and Alex Politsch.
