Schiotis has career day as Sea Gulls take two from Mary Washington

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

SALISBURY, Md. – Freshman infielder John Schiotis led the offensive charge as the No. 21 Salisbury University baseball team took both games of Saturday's doubleheader against Capital Athletic Conference foe University of Mary Washington. The Sea Gulls totaled 27 runs on the day, winning the first game 10-1 and the second game 17-2.

Schiotis had a career-day batting 5-for-6 with 10 RBI between the two games. He hit his first career home run as a Sea Gull in the first win, before he crushed another bomb in the day's second contest.

In the first game, the Sea Gulls blew the game open with eight runs in the first three innings.  Freshman infielder Chris Connor crushed his first home run of the season, a two-run shot, in the second inning to help the Sea Gulls build a 3-0 lead.

Salisbury (9-3, 7-1 CAC) was not finished as the team scored five more runs in the third inning, with each run coming off of a home run. Senior catcher Devon Quaglietta hit a solo home run to open the inning. The Gulls then loaded the bases with Schiotis coming to the plate; the Levittown, Pa., native delivered with a grand slam, driving in all four runs to give the Gulls an 8-0 lead. The Gulls would add two more runs in the fifth inning to bring the total to 10.

Senior pitcher Chris Greiner earned the win, pitching six innings while allowing only one run with five strikeouts.

The second game was much of the same with the Gulls jumping out to a big lead early and scoring in every inning except for the first. A five-run second inning included a three-run home run by Schiotis, an RBI triple by senior outfielder Brad Baylis and an RBI single by junior catcher Tyler Bennett. Schiotis tacked on two more RBI in the third with a double to right field.

Connor added to his day with four more RBI coming off of singles in the fourth and sixth innings and a double in the fifth. Along with the hitting, two wild pitches and three errors by the Eagles (11-3, 3-2 CAC) allowed 10 Sea Gull runs in the final three innings.

Senior pitcher Dustin Herbert picked up the win pitching the complete game. He allowed only one earned run and fanned four batters.

Salisbury will be in action again on the road on Sunday. The Gulls travel to Mary Washington as they look for the sweep in the final game of the weekend series. First pitch is set for 1 p.m.
