Box Score 2 SALISBURY, Md. – The No. 18 Salisbury University softball team opened Capital Athletic Conference play for the 2011 season on Sunday afternoon with a doubleheader sweep of Frostburg State University at the SU Softball Field, winning by scores of 6-0 and 4-0.
In the opener, five combined runs in the second and third innings gave the Gulls (12-4, 2-0 CAC) a commanding lead. An RBI single by junior Casey Zaino and a two-run double from senior Kristin Lord opened up a 3-0 lead in the second inning. Junior Erika Brittingham and sophomore Lindsay McCabe each drove home a run in the third to make it 5-0.
The handful of runs was more than enough for Brittingham, who went the distance on the mound for her eighth win of the year. The Georgetown, Del., native allowed just four hits while walking one and struck out 13.
Senior Taylor Webb scored Salisbury's final run in the fifth inning, coming home on a passed ball.
Salisbury's dominance in the circle continued in the second game, with senior Kelly Leary earning the win. Leary allowed four hits and walked two, striking out a season-high 10 Bobcat batters in the complete game effort.
The Sea Gull offense was good for another early lead as single runs in the first and second innings gave Leary a 2-0 advantage to work with. Sophomore Lindsay Brown got Salisbury's first inning scoring started with a two-out double and was able to easily score on sophomore Michelle Gravdahl's triple to straight away center field.
The lead doubled in the second inning on a two-out single through the right-side by Harley Hill, plating McCabe. Salisbury made the most of its chances in the second game with two outs, batting 5-for-10 in those situations.
Salisbury pushed the lead to four in the fourth inning as Hill doubled down the left field line to score Zaino and McCabe.
Hill and Brown each had two hits in the second game, with Hill driving home three runs, to lead Salisbury.
The Sea Gulls will be back in action on Wednesday as they travel to Stevenson University for another CAC doubleheader which is scheduled to begin at 2:30 p.m.
