Cannone powers Sea Gulls to 10-7 victory at No. 8 Roanoke

Box Score

SALEM, Va. – The No. 3-ranked Salisbury University men's lacrosse team notched a 10-7 non-conference victory at No. 8 Roanoke College on Wednesday evening.

The meeting was the first between the two programs since a 15-9 SU victory in the quarterfinals of the 2007 NCAA tournament. The Sea Gulls (8-0) improve to 16-8 all-time against the Maroons, including 13 straight victories.

Following a turnover by Roanoke (5-3) early in the first quarter, junior midfielder Dean Rossi self-cleared the ball into the offensive end and fired a shot past the goalkeeper for the 1-0 lead. That goal led to an offensive surge for the Sea Gulls, as they found the back of the net five more times in the quarter, including three from junior attackman Matt Cannone.

Roanoke netted its first goal at the 13:29 mark of the second quater when Trey Keeley tallied an unassisted goal. The Sea Gulls responded with a pair of goals by Cannone, including a man-up goal off an assist from junior Sam Bradman with 10:05 remaining in the frame. Roanoke's Justin Tuma closed out the half with a man-down goal to bring the score to 8-2 in favor of Salisbury.

The two goals scored in the first half is the lowest amount this season by the Maroons.

Roanoke battled back in the third quarter, opening the frame with three-straight goals to cut its deficit to 8-5. With the crowd getting back into the game for Roanoke, sophomore midfielder Ryan Clarke dashed past his defender and tallied an unassisted goal to extend the lead to 9-5 and silence the crowd. That would close out the scoring for the quarter.

After Salisbury won the face-off to open the fourth quarter, senior midfielder Shawn Zordani added to the lead with an unassisted goal just 40 seconds in. Over the last 14 minutes, the Maroons would find the net an additional two times to close the lead to 10-7, but that would be as close as it would get.

Salisbury received a game-high five points from Cannone, as the junior posted five goals in the contest. Junior attackman Erik Krum handed out three assists in the victory, while Bradman (one goal) gave out a pair of helpers.

SU senior goalkeeper Johnny Rodriguez earned the victory in the net with nine saves. Senior goalkeeper Tim Swinburn played a minute in the first quarter following a penalty on Rodriguez and notched one save during the span.

Keeley led the way for the Maroons with three points on two goals and one assist. Charles Pease staved off 12 Salisbury shots in the net for Roanoke.

The Sea Gulls are set to host the University of Mary Washington this Saturday at Sea Gull Stadium. The game is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m.
