Box Score NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – The No. 21-ranked Salisbury University baseball team registered seven hits at Christopher Newport University on Thursday afternoon, but could not push a run home, falling to the Captains 4-0.
Salisbury (10-8) had its best chance to score in its first at-bat. Freshman Bill Root led off the game with a single and was followed by senior Brad Baylis with another base knock. A strikeout and a pair of groundouts would strand the Sea Gull base runners.
The Captains (26-1) got their first run on the board in the home half of the fourth inning, putting together a pair of hits off Salisbury starting pitcher Kyle Judson. The senior allowed just the one run on five hits in four innings of work, allowing no walks and picking up a strikeout.
Christopher Newport added three more runs in the bottom of the sixth inning, putting together four hits off reliever Andrew Levy. Senior Devin Gardner worked 2 1/3 innings of scoreless relief to close out the game for the Gulls.
Bryan Bierlein improved to 4-0 collecting the win for the Captains. He allowed just six hits in seven innings of work.
Just five Sea Gulls registered hits on the day, led by Baylis, who went 3-for-4.
Salisbury will get back on the diamond on Friday, hosting Virginia Wesleyan College at the SU Baseball Field; first pitch is scheduled for noon.
