Mendes records career-high six points in 18-2 CAC victory over Mary Washington

SALISBURY, Md. – The third-ranked Salisbury University men's lacrosse team notched an 18-2 Capital Athletic Conference victory over the University of Mary Washington on Saturday afternoon at Sea Gull Stadium.

After winning the opening faceoff, SU sophomore midfielder Tyler Granelli rushed into the offensive zone and fired a shot into the goal just 13 seconds in for the 1-0 lead. The Sea Gulls (9-0, 2-0 CAC) would find the back of the net another six times in the first quarter, including a pair from junior attackman Tony Mendes.

The Eagles (5-5, 1-2 CAC) tallied their first goal just 20 seconds into the second quarter, as Mark Bowler tallied a man-up goal off an assist from Evan Weiss. Salisbury responded with the next four goals, with scores coming from Matt Cannone, Erik Krum, Sam Bradman and Mendes. Weiss tallied the Eagles' second goal at the 6:50 mark to bring the score to 11-2; the maroon and gold closed out the half with Krum's third goal of the game off an assist from senior midfielder Shawn Zordani.

The third quarter would be the last scoring period in the contest, as the Sea Gulls tallied six goals in the frame.

Mendes finished with a career-high six points in the contest, as the junior posted three goals and handed out three assists. Krum (four goals, one assist) and Cannone (three goals, two assists) followed shortly behind with five points. Bradman finished with three goals, while Zordani dished out three helpers for the maroon and gold.

SU goalkeepers Johnny Rodriguez, Tim Swinburn and Alex Taylor all saw action in between the pipes for Salisbury; Rodriguez earned the win with just one save. Weiss finished with a two points to pace the way for the Eagles.

The Sea Gulls will hit the road for a CAC contest at Hood College on Wednesday, March 30 at 4 p.m.
