Box Score 2 SALISBURY, Md. – The No. 16-ranked Salisbury University softball team swept Capital Athletic Conference rival the University of Mary Washington on Saturday afternoon at the SU Softball Field.
The first game was a tight matchup as Salisbury (19-4, 6-0 CAC) took the early lead and then overcame a late three-run inning by the Eagles to win in the bottom of the seventh.
Salisbury scored first in the second inning with a run driven home by freshman Harley Hill and then added another run on the board in the fifth inning as sophomore Carly Read homered to center field to give the Sea Gulls a 2-0 lead.
The Eagles (12-18, 4-2 CAC) came alive in the top of the sixth as they loaded the bases and brought across three runs.
In the bottom of the seventh inning, trailing 3-2, Read was hit by a pitch to lead things off. Sophomore Michelle Gravdahl followed up with a double through the left side to plate Read and knot the score up at 3-3. Senior Taylor Webb then laid down a sacrifice bunt, which allowed Gravdahl to move to third. Sophomore Lindsay McCabe drove in the game-winning run with a single through the left side to score Gravdahl.
Junior pitcher Erika Brittingham (13-3) kept her composure on the mound and went all seven innings for the Gulls as she allowed four hits, walked three and struck out nine batters.
In game two, Salisbury took a 1-0 lead in the first inning and never looked back as the Sea Gulls scored six additional runs to win the game 7-1.
Read and Gravdahl hit solo home runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to bring the tally to 3-0. Sophomore Hannah Mills also had an impressive day at the plate as she went 3-for-4 and brought in two RBI.
Senior pitcher Kelly Leary (6-1) earned the win as she allowed one run on four hits. The Severn, Md., native struck out 14 batters and walked only one.
The Sea Gulls will continue CAC play this week as they are set to travel to Wesley College this Wednesday, March 30, for a doubleheader. First pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m.
