Box Score 2 DOVER, Del. – Senior pitcher Kelly Leary tossed the first perfect game of her Sea Gull career as the No. 16-ranked Salisbury University softball team picked up a doubleheader sweep of Wesley College, winning a pair of games shortened to five innings, 16-1 and 11-0, on Tuesday afternoon.
Leary, the reigning Capital Athletic Conference Pitcher of the Week, struck out eight of the 15 batters she faced, allowing only one ball hit off the ground. With the perfect effort, the Severn, Md., native improved her record in 2011 to 7-1.
The Sea Gulls (21-4, 8-0 CAC) got all the offense Leary would need in the top of the first inning, scoring five runs. Five hits in the frame, highlighted by sophomore Michelle Gravdahl's two-run double, led to the offensive burst as Salisbury sent 13 batters to the plate.
Gravdahl and sophomore Hannah Mills led the Sea Gulls with three hits apiece in the game. Gravdahl drove in four runs while Mills drove home two. Freshman lead-off hitter Harley Hill scored three runs in the win, matching her career high.
Junior pitcher Erika Brittingham also threw three perfect innings in the opening game, striking out all nine batters she faced.
The Sea Gulls scored in every inning, plating a run in the first, two in the second and pushing the lead to 4-0 in the third. But Salisbury was poised for much more, stranding eight runners in the first three innings. And in the fourth, Salisbury blew the game open with six runs.
Wesley (4-20, 0-6 CAC) scored its only run of the day in the fourth inning off reliever Kathryn Larson. The freshman worked two innings, allowing four hits while striking out a pair.
A trio of Sea Gulls had three hits in the opening game; sophomore Sarah Alpaugh went 3-for-3 with a pair of doubles while Gravdahl and junior Casey Zaino each went 3-for-4. Gravdahl also drove in three runs, matching Hill, who scored three as well.
The Sea Gulls will be back in action on Saturday as they head to York (Pa.) College for a CAC doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m.
