Box Score 2 VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. – The No. 9 Salisbury University softball team picked up a pair of wins against Randolph-Macon College and Roanoke College in first-day action at the Virginia Wesleyan Beach Blast on Friday afternoon.
Salisbury (5-3) started the day with a 7-0 win against Randolph-Macon. Junior pitcher Erika Brittingham twirled a gem, tossing her second no-hitter of the season, allowing just one walk and hitting a batter while striking out 14.
Salisbury's offense was dominant, putting up seven big runs, with a number of them coming off of home runs. Sophomore first baseman Lindsay Brown belted a three-run home run, the first long ball of her career, in the game. The three runs driven in match her career high.
The Sea Gulls also got home runs from sophomores Sarah Alpaugh and Hannah Mills. Alpaugh and sophomore Michelle Gravdahl each had two hits in the win.
In the second game, the Sea Gulls survived a late push by Roanoke to win 4-3. The Gulls led 1-0 in the sixth inning when Alpaugh drilled her second home run of the day, a two-run shot to put Salisbury up 3-0.
Freshman Harley Hill drove home a run with a double in the seventh inning to stretch the lead to 4-1, and it would prove invaluable as the Maroons came up with a pair of runs in the home half of the seventh to cut the lead to a run before pitcher Kelly Leary got a pop up to end the game.
Leary earned the win, allowing 10 hits and walking one while striking out five batters. Senior Kristin Lord and sophomore Carly Read each went 2-for-3 in the game. Read scored once and Lord drove home a run.
The Sea Gulls will conclude play in the Beach Blast on Saturday, taking on Peace College and Shenandoah University at noon and 2 p.m., respectively.
