Baseball takes first CAC loss of 2011, falling 5-1 at St. Mary's

Box Score

ST. MARY'S CITY, Md. – The No. 21 Salisbury University baseball team suffered its first Capital Athletic Conference loss of the season, falling at St. Mary's (Md.) College, 5-1.

The Seahawks (7-4, 2-2 CAC) got on the board first, pushing a run across in the first inning off Salisbury senior starting pitcher Chris Greiner.

Salisbury was able to even the score in the top of the fourth inning as senior designated hitter Devon Quaglietta opened the inning with a double and advanced to third on senior Brian Green's fly out to right field. The Sea Gulls scored their only run of the game as sophomore Matt Beck grounded out, but earned the RBI driving Quaglietta home.

The tied game would last only until the bottom of the inning. St. Mary's used two hits and a walk to put together a pair of runs taking a 3-1 lead in the home half of the fourth.

The Seahawks scored two more in the bottom of the eighth, taking advantage of three Salisbury errors.

Greiner took the loss, his first of the year, working seven innings while allowing nine hits and striking out eight batters.

Salisbury (4-3, 3-1 CAC) managed just three hits in the game, with freshman Bill Root and junior Nick Walls each putting up singles in the game.

The teams will meet on the Eastern Shore on Saturday for a doubleheader at the SU Baseball field beginning at noon. The double dip will conclude the season series between the two programs.
