Box Score 2 VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. – The ninth-ranked Salisbury University softball team wrapped up a highly successful weekend at the Virginia Wesleyan College Beach Blast on Saturday afternoon, winning a pair of games by a combined score of 13-4 and going a perfect 4-for-4 in two days of play.
The first game of the day, against Peace College, resulted in an 11-3 victory for the Sea Gulls (7-3). Three pitchers saw time on the mound, allowing a total of just six hits; senior pitcher Kelly Leary earned the win for the maroon and gold, pitching 4 1/3 innings and striking out eight batters. Salisbury had 15 hits in the win; freshman Harley Hill went 2-for-5 at the plate and registered a team-high two doubles to go with one RBI. The eight-run margin of victory marks the second highest of the season for the maroon and gold.
Salisbury's final game of the weekend, against Shenandoah University, was a little closer than the contest against Peace but still resulted in a Sea Gull victory.
Shenandoah scored first, in the top of the second inning, to take a 1-0 lead over Salisbury. That lead would be short-lived, however, as junior Casey Zaino singled in the bottom of the second to score sophomore Sarah Alpaugh and tie the game at one apiece.
The score remained the same until the bottom of the fifth inning, when junior Erika Brittingham stepped up to the plate and knocked in what would eventually be the winning run; Hill crossed home plate to give the Sea Gulls the 2-1 advantage. Shenandoah was unable to return the favor in the sixth or seventh innings, giving Salisbury its fourth-straight win. Aside from her solid day at the plate, Brittingham also pitched for the win. The Georgetown, Del., native struck out nine Shenandoah batters and gave up three hits on the day.
The Sea Gulls now turn their attention to Capital Athletic Conference play, hitting the road to square off against conference opponent Stevenson University in a doubleheader on March 10. First pitch is set for 3 p.m.
