Box Score 2 SALISBURY, Md. – The No. 21-ranked Salisbury University baseball team avenged Friday's loss to St. Mary's (Md.) College by taking Saturday's doubleheader with victories of 8-5 and 11-1. The Sea Gulls' bats came alive with five homeruns and 24 hits on the day.
In the first game, Salisbury (6-3, 5-1 Capital Athletic Conference) jumped out to a 3-0 lead with its first four batters combining to hit for the cycle. Freshman center fielder Bill Root led the game off with his first triple of the day, before freshman outfielder Greg Janofsky launched a two-run home run over the left field wall. The home run was the first of his career and the first of the season for the Sea Gulls.
Junior catcher Tyler Bennett followed Janofsky with a double and subsequently scored on an RBI single by senior catcher Devon Quaglietta that completed the cycle.
After the Gulls put another run on the board in the second inning, Bennett would hit his first home run as a Sea Gull in the third inning. Salisbury gained a 6-0 advantage in the third after freshman second baseman Ken O'Neill was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded.
St. Mary's (7-6, 2-4 CAC) made a comeback attempt, but another two-run inning by the Gulls in the fourth would put the game out of reach, resulting in the 8-5 final score. Senior pitcher Kyle Judson picked up the win going five innings with four strikeouts.
In the day's second contest, SU senior pitcher Dustin Herbert took a perfect game into the top of sixth inning, before surrendering a pair of hits to the Seahawks; St. Mary's scored its only run of the game in the inning. Herbert pitched a complete game with eight strikeouts.
The Salisbury offense started off in similar fashion with a two-run home run in the first inning with Root on base. This time, the bomb came courtesy of junior outfielder Nick Walls.
However, the big inning for the Gulls came in an eight-run second inning in which the team batted around the lineup. The big hits included a Root RBI triple, a Quaglietta two-run home run and RBI doubles by senior infielder Brian Green and freshman infielder Quinn Griffith. Green would add one more run in the fifth inning with his first home run of the season.
The Sea Gulls will be on the road for their next game as they travel to the University of Mary Washington on Thursday. First pitch is set for 2:30 p.m. The Gulls return home on Friday to host Albertus Magnus at 3:30 p.m.
