SALISBURY, Md. – The ninth-ranked Salisbury University softball team picked up a 2-0 victory against Stevenson University on Wednesday in the first round of the Capital Athletic Conference tournament.

The top-seeded Sea Gulls (28-4) took the lead for good in the bottom of the second inning. Sophomore Lindsay Brown started the one-out rally with a single through the left side and advanced to second base on sophomore Carly Read's sacrifice bunt before heading to third on a wild pitch. Brown was knocked home for the game-winning run by senior Kristin Lord, who singled to right.

Salisbury would add an insurance run in the bottom of the fourth inning, but starting pitcher Erika Brittingham didn't need the added run as she tossed her seventh complete-game shutout of the season. The junior gave up just two Stevenson (14-15-1) hits while striking out 17 for the second time this season, matching her career-high. Only three Mustangs reached base in the game, none of which advanced past first base.

The Sea Gull insurance run came around in the fourth inning when pinch runner Angelia McDowell was driven home on a sacrifice fly by Read.

Brown and sophomore Sarah Alpaugh each finished with two hits for the Gulls while sophomore Michelle Gravdahl had the game's only extra-base hit, a double in the third inning.

The Sea Gulls will be back in action on Friday afternoon, hosting a second-round contest at the SU Softball Field. Salisbury will await the result of Thursday's first-round game between No. 3 Frostburg State University and No. 4 York (Pa.) College; the Sea Gulls will host the loser of that game.
