Sea Gulls suffer first loss of CAC tournament; will play St. Mary's tomorrow

Box Score

SALISBURY, Md. – The Salisbury University baseball team picked up its first loss of the double-elimination Capital Athletic Conference tournament on Friday afternoon, falling to the University of Mary Washington by a score of 11-3 at the SU Baseball Field.

Salisbury starting pitcher Dustin Herbert found himself in an early jam after a pair of singles and an error to open the first inning. The senior was able to get a double play ball, which scored a run, and a strikeout to get out of the inning down by just a single run.

Mary Washington (22-13), the tournament's fourth seed, capitalized on another Sea Gull error to score two more runs in the top of the fourth and stretch its lead to 3-0, but Salisbury (20-10) third baseman Brian Green would send a bomb over the left field fence in the bottom of the fourth to shave down the Eagles' lead.

The Eagles would pull away from that point on, scoring seven more runs in the next three innings to secure the victory.

Freshman infielder John Schiotis hit Salisbury's other long ball of the day, in the fifth inning, and posted two RBI in the Sea Gull effort.

The top-seeded maroon and gold's life in the tournament depends on the outcome of an elimination game against fourth-seed St. Mary's (Md.) College, set to be played tomorrow (Saturday, April 16) at 9 a.m. at the SU Baseball Field. The winner of that contest will advance to a game scheduled to be played at 4 p.m. that same day.
