Box Score SALISBURY, Md. – The ninth-ranked Salisbury University softball team eliminated York (Pa.) College (18-14) in the second round of the Capital Athletic Conference tournament on Friday with a sound 3-0 victory.
The Sea Gulls (29-4) took the lead in the fourth inning with unselfish team play. Sophomore Hannah Mills started off the inning with a walk and advanced to second on a throwing error by the Spartan catcher. Junior Casey Zaino then laid down a bunt to move Mills to third base and stay safe at first base. Freshman Angelia McDowell was brought in to pinch run for Zaino as she successfully stole second to put runners on second and third with no outs.
With runners on second and third, sophomore Lindsay Brown hit a sacrifice fly to right field to bring Mills across the plate and bump McDowell to third. Sophomore Carly Read followed with a sacrifice hit to right field to bring McDowell home, scoring the second and final run of the inning.
The Gulls scored again in the fifth inning off the bat of sophomore Michelle Gravdahl, who went 2-for-3 on the day, to bring the game to its final result and knock the fourth-seeded Spartans out of the tournament.
Salisbury remained strong on defense as junior pitcher Erika Brittingham picked up her 19th win of the year, allowing one hit and striking out fourteen batters.
The top-seeded Sea Gulls continue CAC tournament play tomorrow (Saturday, April 16) with a contest against third-seed Frostburg State University (15-15) at 11 a.m. at the SU Softball Field. A win against Frostburg would advance Salisbury to the championship game, which will be played on Sunday at noon.
