Sea Gulls defeat Spartans, 17-3, in CAC semifinal; will play Mary Washington for CAC championship

SALISBURY, Md. – The fifth-ranked Salisbury University women's lacrosse team defeated York (Pa.) College, 17-3, in the semifinals of the 2011 Capital Athletic Conference tournament on Tuesday afternoon at Sea Gull Stadium.

With the victory the Sea Gulls, the No. 1 seed, advance to the CAC championship game; that contest is scheduled to be played this Friday (April 22) at Sea Gull Stadium against the No. 3 seed, the University of Mary Washington. The Eagles (13-6) advanced to the championship game after defeating the second-seed, Stevenson University, by a score of 15-14 in the second overtime session.

The Sea Gulls (15-2) jumped out to a 4-0 lead, as Salisbury received a pair of goals from junior midfielders Alyssa Fowler and Allie Wheatley.  The Spartans (13-4) got their first goal from Whitney Kendall at the 17:33 mark. Over the last 15 minutes of play, Salisbury would outscore York 6-3 for a 10-3 lead at the halftime break.

The Salisbury defense pitched a shutout in the second half of play, as the team allowed just eight shots. The Sea Gull offense continued to churn out goals, recording six second-half goals.

Fowler (three goals, one assist), Wheatley (four goals) and sophomore attacker Roxanne Raab (one goal, three assists) led the way for the maroon and gold with four points. Senior midfielder Aileen McCausland finished shortly behind with three points (on three goals).

SU senior goalkeeper Julie Ann Caulfield posted four saves in 42 minutes of work, while freshman goalkeeper Ashton Wheatley staved off two shots for the Sea Gulls.

York trotted out two goalkeepers in the contest, with Tina Nicklas recording four saves in the first half, and Kelsey Evans finishing with six saves in the second half.

Game time for Friday's CAC championship game is set for 7 p.m.
