YORK, Pa. – The 17th-ranked Salisbury University softball team extended its winning streak against Capital Athletic Conference opponents to 48 games with a pair of victories over host York (Pa.) College on Saturday afternoon.

The Sea Gulls (23-4, 10-0 CAC) registered their 10th shutout win of the year in the first game against the Spartans, a 9-0 decision, with sophomore and reigning ECAC Player of the Week Carly Read slamming a two-run shot over the fence in the top of the fourth inning to give Salisbury a 4-0 lead. The maroon and gold tacked on an additional two runs in the fifth inning and three in the sixth to bring the game to its final score.

Junior Casey Zaino went 3-for-3 at the plate, knocking in three RBI. Junior pitcher Erika Brittingham picked up her 15th win of the season, putting in six innings of work in the circle and striking out 10 batters while allowing just two hits.

The second game was closer than the first, but a solid line-up and well-executed plays preserved the 4-3 win for the maroon and gold.

Senior Kristin Lord went 3-for-3 at the plate, starting with a double in the top of the third inning. A sacrifice bunt by freshman Harley Hill moved Lord to third and sophomore Sarah Alpaugh brought her home with a sacrifice fly to give the Sea Gulls a 1-0 lead. A single by Lord in the fourth inning brought two Sea Gulls across home plate to extend Salisbury's lead to three runs.

The Spartans (15-8, 4-3 CAC) scored for the first time of the afternoon in the fifth inning, but Salisbury answered back in the top of the sixth inning with a run of its own to extend the lead to 4-1. York stepped up to the plate in the bottom of the sixth and brought in a pair of runs to narrow Salisbury's lead to a single run, but that would be as close as the Spartans could get as a scoreless seventh inning gave the Sea Gulls their second win of the day.

Senior pitcher Kelly Leary earned the win for Salisbury, throwing 5 2/3 innings and striking out four batters before being relieved by Brittingham in the sixth inning. Brittingham collected her second save of the year.

The maroon and gold return to the SU Softball Field tomorrow, April 3, to square off against Washington (Md.) College in a doubleheader. The first pitch is set for 1 p.m.
