No. 1 Captains don't scare Sea Gulls; Greiner leads team to 3-2 upset

Box Score

SALISBURY, Md. – Behind the pitching of senior Chris Greiner, the Salisbury University baseball team defeated No. 1-ranked Christopher Newport University on Friday at the SU Baseball Field. Greiner gave up only three hits and one unearned run, allowing the Sea Gulls to pull out the 3-2 upset.

Both teams started off the game without a base runner in the first two innings before the Sea Gulls (22-11) jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the third inning. Junior outfielder Nick Walls led off the inning with a single. He scored when the very next batter, senior outfielder Devon Quaglietta, doubled into left field for the RBI. Quaglietta reached third on a groundout by freshman infielder John Schiotis before stealing home for the Gulls' second run.

Greiner retired the first ten batters he faced before allowing Christopher Newport's first hit in the fourth inning. The Captains would load the bases in the inning, but Greiner did not allow a run by striking out Matt Shoemaker for the third out of the inning.

Christopher Newport (37-5) brought the game to within one in the seventh with its first run of the game, but Salisbury would regain the two-run lead in its half of the inning. Junior catcher Tyler Bennett belted his fourth home run of the year to give the Gulls some insurance with a 3-1 lead.

Senior pitcher Drew Baldwin relieved Greiner in the ninth inning to earn his fifth save of the season.  The Captains squeezed out one run in the inning in a comeback attempt, but Baldwin shut the door, allowing only one hit and the one run in one inning. Greiner pitched eight innings and struck out 10 in the win, improving his record to 7-2.

Walls, Quaglietta, Bennett and freshman infielder Joey Jones each recorded one of the Sea Gulls' four hits on the day.

Salisbury will next be in action on the road as the Gulls travel to Washington College on Wednesday.  First pitch is set for 3 p.m.
