Herbert earns program-best 29th career win as Gulls sweep Wesley to stay on top of CAC standings

SALISBURY, Md. – The Salisbury University baseball team did its part in the race for the top seed in the upcoming Capital Athletic Conference tournament by earning a doubleheader sweep of Wesley College on Saturday. Now, the Gulls will await Frostburg State University's doubleheader against the University of Mary Washington on Sunday to see where they stand.

Salisbury (19-9, 13-5 CAC) closed out its CAC regular-season slate with wins of 6-1 and 1-0 against the Wolverines, and sit a game ahead of the Bobcats (18-8, 11-5 CAC). One loss by Frostburg in Sunday's doubleheader and the Gulls take the No. 1 seed, a sweep by the Bobcats and Salisbury will be the No. 2 seed.

Senior pitcher Dustin Herbert not only did his part to ensure a doubleheader sweep, with six strong innings of work in the first game, but he also made his way into the program's record books with the 29th victory of his career, the most in Salisbury baseball history.

Herbert scattered seven hits in his time on the mound allowing just one run, in the top of the first inning, while striking out four to improve to 6-1 on the year and 29-6 in his career.

Salisbury got Herbert the runs that the team would need to win in the home half of the fourth inning on a two-run single to center field off the bat of junior Nick Walls. The base knock scored senior Brian Green and junior Tyler Bennett.

Salisbury would add four more runs in the bottom of the sixth, including a solo home run by Bennett to lead off the inning, his team-leading third of the season.

In the second game, it was all about pitching and defense as senior Nathan Young picked up his fourth win of the season with six shutout innings on the hill. With a pair of shutouts before Saturday's game, Young has now thrown 20 consecutive innings without allowing a run.

Salisbury put up the game's only run in the home half of the third inning. Freshman Bill Root reached on a one-out infield single; he would steal second and advance to third when the catcher's throw got into center field. The game-winning run came home on Green's single to left field.

Young made the one run stand up through six and senior Drew Baldwin came on in the seventh and retired the Wolverines (15-16, 7-10 CAC) in order for his fourth save of the year. Baldwin worked the final inning in both of Saturday's games, allowing just a walk, while striking out four.

No matter what Frostburg State does on Sunday, the Gulls will host a CAC tournament first round game on Tuesday, April 12 against an opponent yet to be determined. For updated schedule information visit www.suseagulls.com as the week progresses.
