MILLINGTON, Tenn. – The 29th-ranked Salisbury University baseball team took a loss in its first game at the double-elimination NCAA South Regional at USA Stadium, falling to Piedmont College, 10-1.

The Sea Gulls (29-12), the fourth-seeded team in the six-team regional, took a 1-0 lead in the top of the third inning when senior Devon Quaglietta began a rally with a one-out double. Quaglietta advanced to third on a wild pitch before being driven home by freshman Bill Root.

However, the hits by Quaglietta and Root would be two of just five for the Sea Gulls in the game as Lions starter Kevin Caldwell surrendered just the one run in eight innings of work, walking three while striking out eight.

Piedmont (31-13), the third-seeded team, came back to tie the game in the bottom of the third, getting to Salisbury starting pitch Chris Greiner for two hits in the inning.

The Lions scored two runs in the bottom of the fourth inning before plating seven more in the sixth to put the game away.

Quaglietta finished 2-for-3 in the game while Root, freshman Ken O'Neill and junior Chris Connor had Salisbury's other hits.

The Sea Gulls will now face elimination on Thursday as they take on sixth-seeded Webster University (32-11), which brought down top-seeded, and the No. 1-ranked team in the nation, Christopher Newport University, 11-1 on Wednesday. First pitch on Thursday is slated for 4:30 p.m.
