Baseball's winning streak runs to seven with doubleheader sweep of Staten Island

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

SALISBURY, Md. – The Salisbury University baseball team kept its late-season roll going on Friday afternoon, picking up a doubleheader sweep over the College of Staten Island at the SU Baseball Field.

A perfect bunt, and subsequent error, in the bottom of the eighth inning gave Salisbury a 3-2 win in the first game, while the Sea Gulls' offense came alive in the nightcap for 10 hits and an 11-2 win.

Staten Island scored a run in the first inning of the opening game, and held the lead until the sixth inning. The Dolphins added a run in the top of the fifth and starting pitcher Pat Gale was keeping the Sea Gull batters off balance. Through five innings, Salisbury had just two base runners, but was able to tie the game up in the sixth. Senior Brian Green drove home the Gulls' first run and freshman Ken O'Neill scored on a two-out wild pitch to even the score.

The teams would head to the eighth inning still tied at 2-2, but the Gulls would push across the game winner. Freshman Bill Root opened the eighth with a double to left field. O'Neill looked to move Root to third base and laid down a perfect sacrifice bunt up the third base line. O'Neill reached safely, and the late throw to attempt to get him sailed over the first baseman's head, allowing Root to come home easily with the game-winning run.

Root and Green each finished with two hits in the game. Senior Drew Baldwin picked up his second win in as many days, working 1/3 inning in relief, striking out the only batter he faced.

The Salisbury offense came out swinging in the second game, scoring two runs in each of the first three innings to cruise to the win.

Root led off the bottom of the first inning with a double and scored easily on O'Neill's triple to center field. A sacrifice fly by junior Tyler Bennett brought O'Neill home for the 2-0 lead.

The rest of the Salisbury lineup fed off Root and O'Neill's start as the Gulls pounded out eight extra-base hits in the game. O'Neill added a double and a two-run home run, marking the first extra-base hits of his career, and senior Dustin Herbert drilled his fourth home run of the season, a solo shot, in the third inning. Chris Connor's two-run home run in the sixth was his fifth of the season.

Senior pitcher Nathan Young didn't give the Dolphins (23-18) a chance to threaten in the game, allowing just four hits, while striking out five in six innings of work to pick up his fifth win of the season.

Salisbury (28-11) will play its final regular-season game on Thursday, May 12, hosting Montclair State University at the SU Baseball Field. The game is slated to begin at 3:30 p.m.
