Women's lacrosse closes regular season with 17-7 victory over CNU

Box Score

SALISBURY, Md. – The fifth-ranked Salisbury University women's lacrosse team closed out the regular season with a dominant 17-7 win against the USA South Conference champion Christopher Newport University at Sea Gull Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

Prior to the start of the game, Salisbury (17-2) celebrated its seven seniors who were playing in their final regular-season game at Sea Gull Stadium. With Saturday's win, Salisbury ran its record over the last four seasons to 80-6.

After the Captains (13-5) opened the scoring with a tally from Rachel Tomlinson four minutes into the contest, the Salisbury offense came to life, scoring six-straight goals. Senior Aileen McCausland scored the equalizer a minute after Tomlinson's strike, taking a feed from senior Trish DiGirolomo, and the Gulls took the lead for good when sophomore Katie Bollhorst put home another DiGirolomo helper.

DiGirolomo assisted on Salisbury's third goal as she would finish with six helpers in the game and a game-high seven points.

Down 6-1, Christopher Newport put home a pair of goals to cut the deficit to 6-3, but that was as close as the Captains would be for the rest of the afternoon as the Gulls scored the next eight goals, stretching into the second half.

To go with DiGirolomo's seven points, junior Allie Wheatley tallied a game-high five goals while senior Morgan Illian was good for three scores.

Senior Julie Ann Caulfield turned away a pair of CNU shots in just over 40 minutes in cage to collect the win.

Salisbury will now await the release of the NCAA tournament bracket on Sunday night at 9:30 p.m. on www.ncaa.com. The Sea Gulls earned the automatic berth for their 12th tournament appearance by claiming the Capital Athletic Conference championship back on April 22.
