Salisbury pushes win streak to 18 with 3-0 victory over Johns Hopkins

Box Score

SALISBURY, Md. – The No. 18 Salisbury University volleyball team faced off with another 20-win team, welcoming Johns Hopkins University to Maggs Physical Activities Center on Wednesday night and the Sea Gulls came away with another victory, their 18th in a row, topping the Blue Jays, 3-0.

The opening set was the closest of the night. Salisbury (22-1) took the early lead, putting together an 8-2 run to take a five-point advantage, 10-5, on a kill from freshman Ashlyn Tapley. It was one of three early kills for Tapley, who registered eight in the match.

The Sea Gulls stretched their lead to as many as seven, 20-13, when senior Jenna Shay put a kill down, but the Blue Jays (20-3) would find a spurt of their own to close the gap. Johns Hopkins' Carolyn Zin served her team to a 4-0 run making it a 20-18 score before Meagan Donahoe would come up with a kill, tying the opening set at 23-23.

After a Salisbury timeout, senior Chelsea Glowacki ripped one of her match-best 11 kills to give Salisbury a 24-23 lead and a Hopkins ball-handling error gave the Gulls the first set. Junior Julie Poston had a team-high five kills in the opening set, on 11 swings with no errors.

Early runs in each of the next two sets allowed Salisbury to claim the victory. In the second, the Sea Gulls opened with a 7-3 run thanks to a pair of service aces by freshman Kacey Franz and another by sophomore Michelle Meehan. The pair, playing on the back row, led the Salisbury defense which allowed the Blue Jays to hit just .042 in the final two sets.

The Blue Jays could get no closer than three after that point as an 8-2 run, capped by kills from senior Carley Todd and Glowacki, push Salisbury ahead by nine.

Glowacki and Poston blocked the Blue Jays' first offensive effort in the closing set, which sparked a 10-3 run to open the final frame.

Glowacki, Todd and Tapley each had three kills in the set as Salisbury never wavered on its way to the 3-0 win.

Glowacki had a team-high 13 digs to go with her 11 kills while Todd dished out 30 assists in the match. Senior Kelly Vieira had six digs, five kills and five assists while also assisting on three blocks.

The Sea Gulls will be back in action this weekend, hosting the SU Invitational. Salisbury will play SUNY New Paltz and Springfield College on Saturday and take on Richard Stockton and the University of Mary Washington on Sunday.
