McGahagan's double-double efforts not enough as SU falls to Eastern, 64-57

Box Score

ST. DAVIDS, Pa. – Senior forward Katie McGahagan recorded her third consecutive double-double as the Salisbury University women's basketball team fell at Eastern University, 64-57, on Thursday evening.

After a slow start to the contest, a three-pointer from sophomore guard Courtney McManus and a steal by classmate Maggie King, who hit junior forward Becca Himes for two, gave Salisbury its first lead, 5-2, in the opening minutes. The Sea Gulls held onto the lead through the remainder of the first half.

Salisbury (3-4) built a 15-4 lead denying the Eastern on four shot attempts over a two-minute span, before Tori Grossi scored for the Eagles to end the run.

Junior guard Kelsey Verica's three would give SU an 18-6 edge before sophomore point guard Anna Hackett put two in off the glass after turning over Meghan Nowak with 11 minutes remaining in the half.

The Eagles (4-4) mounted a comeback to get within six, but two quick threes from Verica and McManus gave SU a 28-16 cushion with five minutes to go. McManus would sink one last shot from behind the arc to push Salisbury to a 35-27 advantage before the Gulls entered the second half with a 10-point lead, 37-27.

The Eagles would grab the lead with 9:36 remaining in the game, as Gina DiDomenico hit a three, capping an 11-3 run. The 51-50 edge marked the first lead for Eastern since 2-0. A quick layup by Hackett would give the Sea Gulls a 52-51 advantage but it would be the last of the evening for Salisbury.

McGahagan pulled SU back within one, 55-54, after sinking two free throws with six minutes left in the contest, but the Eagles would score seven points that the Gulls could not recover from, falling 67-54.

SU next hosts Frostburg State University on Saturday, Dec. 8 in its first Capital Athletic Conference contest of the season. The maroon and gold will take the court at 1 p.m.
