Salisbury takes advantage of turnovers in 55-42 win against Marymount

Box Score

SALISBURY, Md. – The Salisbury University men's basketball team controlled the basketball, committing just nine turnovers and forcing 21 by visiting Marymount (Va.) University, on Wednesday night to pick up a 55-42 Capital Athletic Conference win.

The Sea Gulls (11-9, 4-7 CAC) capitalized on the miscues by the Saints scoring 20 points off turnovers with a balanced attack that did not see a single Salisbury player score in double figures. Every starter scored either seven or eight points and freshman Chris Viqueira put up a team-best nine points off the bench.

Salisbury found itself in an early hole as the Saints (5-15, 1-10 CAC) opened the game on a 5-0 run over the first two minutes of play. But the Marymount lead was short-lived as a pair of free throws by senior Mike Maczko and a three-pointer from Viqueira gave the Gulls a 9-8 lead with 12:45 left in the first half and sparked a 16-0 run.

By the time senior Devin Posey laid the ball in with 3:29 left in the half, Salisbury had opened up a 20-8 lead and the Gulls would take a 23-16 lead into halftime.

The Saints cut the edge to one point early in the second half, before two free throws from junior Trent Epps and a three-pointer from senior Mike Atkins pushed the advantage back to six points with 17:52 remaining in the contest.

Salisbury's lead would be down to one possession just once more in the contest as Salisbury opened up a double-figure lead in the final five minutes of play.

Maczko, Epps and sophomore Tim Harwood each scored eight points while Maczko also grabbed eight rebounds and registered three steals.

Jesse Konadu scored 15 points to lead the Saints.

The Sea Gulls will be back in action on Saturday as they travel to the University of Mary Washington. The game is slated to begin at 2 p.m.
