Salisbury falls to York on senior day, 65-61

Box Score

SALISBURY, Md. – The Salisbury University men's basketball team celebrated senior day at Maggs Physical Activities Center, but was unable to send the five seniors out on a high note, falling to conference foe York (Pa.) College, 65-61.

Senior Mike Maczko had a solid all-around effort, with nine points and a team-high nine rebounds in his last game for the Sea Gulls. Junior Trent Epps led Salisbury (12-13, 5-11 Capital Athletic Conference) with 17 points and added five rebounds.

Looking to finish out the season above .500 in Head Coach Josh Merkel's first season and with each of the seniors in the starting lineup, Salisbury came out strong to open the game.

Trailing 13-11 just six mintues into the game, Salisbury put together a 10-2 run to open up a 21-15 lead as Epps capped the spurt with a layup off of an assist from sophomore Tim Harwood. The Sea Gulls maintained the lead and took a 36-32 edge into the locker room.

Coming out after the break, Maczko hit a three-pointer to give the Sea Gulls their biggest lead of the day at seven points. After that, a 9-2 York run would tie the game, 41-41. The game remained close throughout as there were nine lead changes in the game and at 12 different points the score was tied. Salisbury's bench kept it in the contest, combining for 36 points, led by Epps and freshman Chris Viqueira's 11 points.

Epps' layup with 2:06 showing on the clock gave the Gulls their final lead of the night, 57-56, but the Spartans would come right back on their next possession as Mo Oursler hit a three to give York (15-10, 10-6 CAC) the lead for good.

Senior Jason Nwosu finished out his college career with a seven-point, three-rebound effort for Salisbury. Classmate Devin Posey led the Sea Gulls with four assists.

The Sea Gulls end the year on a four-game skid, but look to build upon this season going in Merkel's second year at the helm. Among the five seniors, Salisbury will lose co-captains Maczko, Mike Atkins.
