Sea Gulls top Lynchburg in home opener, 16-7

SALISBURY, Md. – The No. 1 Salisbury University men's lacrosse team came out victorious over No. 11 Lynchburg College, 16-7, on Saturday in the team's first home game of the 2012 season.

Salisbury jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead, just 90 seconds into the game. Senior attackman Erik Krum took a pass from junior midfielder Ryan Clarke and put it in the back of the net less than one minute into the quarter. Krum's goal was followed 30 seconds later by an unassisted goal from senior attackman Tony Mendes.

Two Lynchburg goals sandwiched a goal by Clarke to bring the score to 3-2 before the Gulls netted three unanswered goals. Senior attackman Kyle Quist scored on an assist from senior midfielder Sam Bradman, following which, Bradman, who led the Gulls with six points (four goals, two assists) in the game, scored back-to-back goals.

Salisbury led, 6-3, after the first quarter.

The second quarter opened with another Bradman score just 31 seconds into play. The teams traded goals for the remainder of the half as senior attackman Matt Cannone scored his first of the game followed by a Hornets' goal. Senior midfielder Jeff McGuire put the Gulls on the board again before Lynchburg got the last goal of the half to the SU advantage to 9-5 at halftime.

Salisbury dominated the second half, outscoring the Hornets, 7-2, including four unanswered goals in the third quarter. Senior midfielder Cory Nowak put away Salisbury's first goal of the third quarter on a Bradman assist. Clarke followed with two goals and senior attackman Lantz Carter added the fourth.

Lynchburg got on the board to start the fourth quarter before Bradman and Cannone scored consecutive goals less than one minute apart. Senior attackman Logan Keyser scored the Gulls' final goal to cap off the win.

Clark (three goals, one assist) and Cannone (two goals, two assists) were second to Bradman in points with four each. Eight other Sea Gulls registered a point in the game. In all, 10 different players scored goals for Salisbury.

Sophomore goalkeeper Alex Taylor picked up his second victory, making eight saves.

Salisbury will be at home again on Saturday as No. 2 Roanoke College comes to Sea Gull Stadium for a rematch of last season's NCAA Semifinal game. The game is set for 12 p.m.
