Sea Gulls defeat Roanoke in No. 1 vs. No. 2 matchup

Box Score

SALISBURY, Md. – The No. 1 Salisbury University men's lacrosse team picked up its third win of the season against No. 2 Roanoke College on Saturday at Sea Gull Stadium, 22-5.

The Maroons took the first lead of the game with a goal from midfielder Mike Hayden. However, the lead only lasted nine seconds as junior midfielder Tyler Granelli won the following faceoff, raced down the field and ripped a shot into the back of the net to tie the game, 1-1.

Granelli's score sparked a 4-0 run by Salisbury that included a score by senior midfielder Jeff McGuire and two goals by junior midfielder Ryan Clarke.

Two Sea Gull penalties led to two Roanoke man-up goals to bring the score to 4-3 before two goals by senior midfielder Sam Bradman gave the Gulls a 6-3 lead going into the second quarter.

The Sea Gulls hit their stride in the second quarter, outscoring their opponents 6-1 to take a 12-4 lead into halftime. The offensive power was provided by senior attackmen Erik Krum, Tony Mendes and Kyle Quist as each player netted two goals in the quarter.

The Gulls' offensive dominance continued in the third quarter with nine goals scored by seven different players while the defense shut out the Maroons' offense. Quist and Krum both scored twice more to finish tied for the team lead with four goals each. Sophomore attackman Rhett DePol and senior midfielder Kyle Gallagher each tallied their first goals of 2012, as well.

Salisbury showed why it is the No. 1 team in the nation by outscoring Roanoke 15-1 in the two-quarter outburst. The Gulls took a 21-4 lead into the fourth quarter.

Freshman midfielder Adam Stork scored his first-career goal as a Gull, in the fourth quarter, with Salisbury's final goal.

Salisbury was led by Bradman and Quist who both tallied five points. Krum and Gallagher tied for second with four. In all, 12 different Sea Gulls scored.

The Sea Gull defense was impenetrable in the second half, allowing only one goal. For the game, it combined for 14 caused turnovers and smothered 7-of-10 Roanoke extra man opportunities.

Sophomore goalie Alex Taylor picked up his third win of the year with 11 saves on the day.

Salisbury will be at home again on Wednesday against McDaniel College at 3:30 p.m.
