Box Score SALISBURY, Md. – The No. 6 Salisbury University women's lacrosse team opened its 2012 campaign with a convincing 19-2 win against Roanoke College at Sea Gull Stadium.
Junior Katie Bollhorst opened the scoring for the Sea Gulls (1-0), getting on the board one minute into the contest. Thirty-seven seconds later, senior Carrie Bray scored the first of her three goals for Salisbury and the Sea Gulls never looked back. Salisbury put the first 10 tallies on the board before a Roanoke College (0-1) goal was scored with 6:48 left in the first half.
Senior Allie Wheatley led the Sea Gull attack with five goals. Bollhorst, who added three goals of her own, led the team with five helpers.
From the onset of the game, Salisbury was in control in nearly every aspect. In the first half, the Sea Gulls outshot the Maroons 20-8 and had a 9-4 ground ball advantage. For the game, the Sea Gulls held a 36-12 edge in shots and earned 15 ground balls to Roanoke's six. Roanoke had twice as many turnovers as Salisbury in the contest as well.
Roanoke's first goal, from Allison Bonanno, with 6:48 left in the first half was the only goal allowed by starting goalkeeper, sophomore Ashton Wheatley. Wheatley made three saves before giving way to classmate Hannah Whiteley at the half.
Freshman Summer Washburn tallied her first collegiate goal in the contest, scoring 30 seconds into the second half. Classmates Hayden Hutzell and Bethany Baer also scored the first goals of their careers in the contest. Baer added an assist as well and classmates Kate Haker, with two, and Kara O'Rourke got on the score sheet with assists in their first game as well.
After Bonanno scored her second goal at the 26:02 mark in the second half, the Sea Gulls scored the final five goals to end the game. Back-to-back goals during the late run were scored by junior Maggie Roundy.
The Sea Gulls face off against the Catholic University of America at Sea Gull Stadium on Saturday, March 3 at 3 p.m.
