Fourth-quarter surge pushes Salisbury past Ohio Wesleyan

Box Score

SEVERNA PARK, Md. – The No. 1 Salisbury University men's lacrosse team remained unbeaten in 2012 with Saturday's 18-7 victory over Ohio Wesleyan University at the Severn School.

The game reamined close until late in the third quarter when the Sea Gulls ripped off a 9-0 run to distance themselves from the Battling Bishops in the 11-goal win. The Gulls were led by the duo of senior midfielder Sam Bradman and senior attackman Matt Cannone who both scored five goals and registered three assists to lead the team with eight points each.

Salisbury jumped out to a 6-1 lead in the first quarter with scores from Bradman, Cannone, senior attackman Erik Krum and junior midfielder Ryan Clarke. Cannone and Krum both netted two in the period.

The Gulls won 6-of-8 faceoffs and were successful on 5-of-5 clearing attempts which provided the offensive spark that created the lead.

The game evened out for the second and third quarters as the Sea Gulls only outscored Ohio Wesleyan 5-4 over that span. The Bishops scored two in the second while Cannone netted the lone Salisbury goal in that quarter.

Bradman traded two goals with the opposition to start the third, bringing the score to 9-5 before the Gulls went on their nine-goal tear.

Salisbury dominated play from then on as the team won 13-of-17 faceoffs, converted 9-of-11 clear attempts and outshot the Bishops 28-13.

Krum led the assault that lasted from the 2:18 mark in the third quarter to the 6:03 mark in the fourth quarter with three goals in that span. Bradman, Cannone and senior attackman Tony Mendes all scored two.

The Salisbury defense stifled the Bishops' offense before it could even get started for most of the game, holding the opposition to just 11-of-24 clear attempts. Sophomore defender Zeke Smith continued his strong season by leading the team with three caused turnovers and finishing second with five ground balls.

Sophomore goalkeeper Alex Taylor played 51 minutes in the cage on the way to his seventh victory of the season; he made seven saves on the day.

Salisbury will be in action again on the road as the team travels to Washington & Lee University on Wednesday. The game is set to begin at 4 p.m.
