No. 9 Salisbury overwhelms Frostburg State, 16-4, to win series

Box Score

SALISBURY, Md. – Six Salisbury University baseball players collected multiple hits and four drove in multiple runs as the No. 9 Sea Gulls defeated Frostburg State University, 16-4, to win a Capital Athletic Conference weekend series on Sunday at the SU Baseball Field.

SU (11-3, 4-2 CAC) scored in every inning except the second, sixth and eighth, banging out 17 hits.

Senior Tyler Bennett led the offensive attack, batting 4-for-5 with a two-run home run, two doubles, three runs scored and two driven in. Junior Matt Beck finished 2-for-2 with a run scored and a game-high three RBIs. Nick Walls, Quinn Griffith, Johnny Schiotis and Ken O'Neill also picked up two hits apiece.

Salisbury scored three runs in the bottom of the fourth to take a 6-3 lead. O'Neill walked with one out and stole second, advancing to third on a throwing error by Frostburg State catcher Adam Baxley. Bill Root followed with a base hit to plate O'Neill and give SU the lead for good. Then, with two outs, Bennett drove a 1-0 pitch over the left-field fence for his second homer of the year.

A Nick Gentry triple to right field in the fifth scored Griffith and Schiotis singled to center to bring Gentry home to move the lead to 8-4 before the Gulls scored eight in the seventh to put the game out of reach.

Salisbury used five hits and two Frostburg State (6-6, 2-3) errors in the inning while sending 12 batters to the plate. Walls beat out a roller to third with the bases loaded to knock in the first run of the frame. Chris Connor singled to center to bring in Root and O'Neill to make it 11-4. After an FSU error loaded the bases again, Beck singled to right, scoring Connor and Walls. Salisbury tacked three more unearned runs in the inning for the final margin.

Junior Danny Druzgala (2-0) earned the win in relief of starter Jeff Hoffman. Druzgala pitched three innings with three strikeouts.

The Bobcats battled back to knot the game, 3-3, in the top of the fourth with a pair of runs with two outs off Hoffman. With the bases loaded J.K. Filauro singled to shortstop to bring home Adam Summerfelt, but O'Neill at short threw the ball away, allowing Garrett Price to come across, as well.

Summerfelt paced FSU, going 2-for-3 with a run scored and an RBI.

Joe Markiewicz Jr. (0-2) took the loss on the mound for the Bobcats. He went four innings, gave up six hits and six earned runs with three walks, fanning four.

SU returns to action, hosting Albertus Magnus College on Friday at 2 p.m.
