Defense remains dominant as Sea Gulls stall Generals, 13-3

Box Score

LEXINGTON, Va. – The No. 1 Salisbury University men's lacrosse team held its opponent scoreless in the first half for the third time this season during Wednesday's 13-3 victory over Washington & Lee University. The Gulls were without head coach Jim Berkman due to a medical situation.

The Sea Gull defense played another dominant game by not allowing a goal until the fourth quarter for the second time in 2012, and it only allowed three goals for the game. The unit also shut down the W&L offense in man-up situations by not allowing a goal on nine Generals' extra-man opportunities.

Senior defender Andrew Sellers led the group with four caused turnovers.

The offense was led by a trio of seniors in midfielder Sam Bradman who led the team with six points (two goals and four assists), and attackmen Erik Krum and Matt Cannone who both tallied five points. Krum led the team with four goals and added one helper while Cannone added one score and four assists.

Salisbury scored within the first minute of the game as junior midfielder Ryan Clarke netted a pass from Bradman with just 59 seconds taken off of the clock. Krum and senior attackman Tony Mendes, who finished the game with two goals and one assist, both added goals in the first period as the Gulls took a 3-0 lead into the second quarter.

Senior attackman Kyle Quist, Krum and Bradman all scored in the second to give Salisbury a 6-0 lead going into halftime. Bradman added two assists in the quarter to tally a four-point half.

The Sea Gulls were the more opportunistic team in the half as they only outshot the Generals, 19-16, but came out with all of the goals. The teams also split the face off wins with both winning 4-of-8, but the Gulls had the edge in converted clears with a perfect 13-for-13.

Bradman started the third-quarter scoring with a goal off of a helper from Cannone before Krum ripped off three consecutive scores. The Gulls took a 10-0 lead into the fourth quarter.

Senior midfielder Parker Dickerson added his first goal of the season in the fourth quarter. Sophomore midfielder Sean Fitzgerald and Mendes added the Gulls' final scores to cap the game.

Sophomore goalkeeper Alex Taylor picked up the victory, his eighth of the season, while making a career-high 14 saves.

Berkman plans to return for the team's next game as the Sea Gulls will be in action at York (Pa.) College on Wednesday, March 21, at 3:30 p.m.
