Box Score 2 SALISBURY, Md. – Freshman pitcher Rachel Johnson pitched her first collegiate no-hitter against Grove City College as the No. 18 Salisbury University softball team went on to win 6-0 in its first game of the Salisbury Invitational. The Sea Gulls then went on a hitting spree against Capital University, scoring 10 runs off eight hits ending the game in six innings, 10-2.
Johnson (4-2) picked up her first no-no as a Sea Gull, matching a career-best of 11 strikeouts against the Wolverines (2-6). The freshman did not allow a single walk during the contest.
Salisbury (13-5) started the day off strong, bringing two runs across the plate in the top of the first inning off the bats of senior
Casey Zaino and junior
Lindsay McCabe.
In the top of the third inning, McCabe reached first base due to a Wolverine error and advanced to second after sophomore
Molly Gigioli came up with an infield hit. With two outs, junior
Carly Read drove a hard shot to third base bringing McCabe home, advancing the score to 3-0.
Salisbury would score three additional runs throughout the contest to bring the final score to 6-0.
In the second game of the day, the Gulls would only need six innings to defeat Capital, scoring seven runs in the final frame.
The Crusaders (5-5) took the early lead in the first with Nicole George's home run but Salisbury answered back quickly in the bottom of the inning. Junior Sarah Alpaugh started the Gulls off with a double to left field followed by a walk from junior Michelle Gravdahl. Up next for the maroon and gold was junior Hannah Mills, who filled the bases with a single. Zaino then hit a sacrifice fly allowing Alpaugh to tag up and touch home, evening the score at 1-1.
In the top of the second Capital would once again take the lead, 2-1, but from then on Salisbury took control scoring twice in the bottom of the third, off a two-run home run from Gravdahl, and then scoring seven runs in the bottom of the sixth.
Senior
Erika Brittingham (8-3) earned the win in the circle going all six innings, allowing two runs off six hits while walking one Crusader and striking out five.
Read went 3-for-7 on the day, driving in three runs and scoring once while McCabe also went 3-for-7, hitting two RBIs and crossing home three times.
Salisbury returns to action tomorrow, Saturday, March 17, in the final day of the Salisbury Invitational. The Sea Gulls will match up against Grove City at 11 a.m., and then take on The College of New Jersey at 3 p.m.
