Softball caps off Salisbury Invitational with two wins

| Box Score 2

SALISBURY, Md. – The No. 18 Salisbury University softball team capped off the Salisbury Invitational winning its second contest against Grove City College this weekend, 8-0, and then taking down The College of New Jersey, 5-0, to end the invitational with a perfect 4-0 record.

In the first game of the day, juniors Sarah Alpaugh and Michelle Gravdahl each hit a home run off of the Wolverines' pitcher Lauren Clarke. Alpaugh hit her first home run of the season, knocking in two runs for the Gulls in the top of the third. Prior to Alpaugh's homer, junior Carly Read singled up the middle allowing senior Casey Zaino to come across the plate. The Gulls scored three runs in the third inning to lead Grove City, 3-0.

Gravdahl hit a solo shot out past left field for her sixth home run of the season, and second of the invitational.

Senior pitcher Erika Brittingham (9-3) went five innings for the maroon and gold. The Georgetown, Del., native struck out nine Wolverines while walking one and allowing three hits. Sophomore Kathryn Larson took the circle in relief, pitching a perfect two innings while striking out one.

SU tacked on four additional runs in the top of the seventh when it found bases loaded with one out. Junior Hannah Mills singled up the middle and advanced to third off a Wolverine fielding error, scoring Gravdahl, Alpaugh and sophomore Angelia McDowell. The Sea Gulls then took advantage of another Grove City error, scoring once more as Mills brought in the final run of the contest, 8-0.

Freshman pitcher Rachel Johnson (5-2) took the circle for game two against The College of New Jersey. Johnson was able to keep the Lions off-balance allowing only two hits in the early part of the game while striking out seven.

Salisbury got on the board first in the bottom of the second inning as Brittingham singled to right field advancing Mills to third, who then scored on a Lion error.

The Sea Gulls would put up four more runs during the game, two in the fourth inning and two in the fifth.

In the bottom of the fourth, Zaino singled to center field with two outs, igniting Salisbury's offense. Sophomore Harley Hill then drove a double to left field putting runners on second and third. Classmate Molly Gigioli brought in Zaino and Hill after smashing a double through the left side, putting Salisbury up 3-0.

Mills and Brittingham each drove in a run in the bottom of the fifth, bringing the final score to 5-0.

Zaino went 3-for-6 on the day, tagging home twice while Brittingham went 2-for-3 at the plate with one RBI.

Salisbury will be back in action on Sunday, March 25, in its first Capital Athletic Conference doubleheader against Hood College. Game one is scheduled for 1 p.m.
