Seventeen-goal first half pushes Salisbury past Frostburg

SALISBURY, Md. – The No. 1 Salisbury University men's lacrosse team exploded for 17 goals in the first half of Saturday's 21-2 victory over Frostburg State University at Sea Gull Stadium.

Senior attackman Matt Cannone continued his hot streak with a team-leading eight points. His five goals and three assists were also team-highs for the game. Cannone registered four of his points in the first quarter helping the Sea Gulls jump out to a 7-1 lead.

Senior midfielder Jeff McGuire netted the Gulls' first score off of a Cannone pass before Cannone scored a man-up goal for his first. Senior midfielder Sam Bradman and senior attackman Erik Krum both had two goals, and senior attackman Lantz Carter had one in the quarter.

The offensive dominance continued in the second quarter as Salisbury added 10 goals, outshot the Bobcats 20-1, converted on 3-of-4 extra-man opportunities and won 9-of-11 faceoffs. Cannone led the charge with three goals in the quarter while Bradman and junior midfielder Ryan Clarke both netted two.

The Sea Gulls dominated at the faceoff X for the entire game winning 20-of-26 faceoffs. Midfielders Tyler Granelli, a junior, and Chris Biank, a sophomore, both finished the game going 10-for-12 on faceoffs.

Senior attackman Tony Mendes, senior midfielder Kyle Gallagher and Granelli all had scores, as well, giving Salisbury a 17-1 lead going into halftime.

Salisbury started the third quarter with Cannone's final goal off of an assist from Mendes. Mendes finished the game with a goal and two assists. Senior attackman Kyle Quist scored with 31 seconds left in the third quarter as the Gulls led 19-2 after the period.

Senior attackman Logan Keyser and freshman midfielder James Burton added Salisbury's final two goals. Burton's goal was the first of his career.

Krum (two goals and two assists) and Bradman (four goals) both finished tied for second on the team with four points.

The team outshot Frostburg 51-23 for the game.

Sophomore goalkeeper Alex Taylor picked up his 10th win with four saves on the day.

Salisbury will be on the road for its next game when the team travels to Marymount (Va.) on Saturday. The game is set to start at 1 p.m.
