Box Score 2 OWINGS MILLS, Md. – Junior Sarah Alpaugh got the No. 20 Salisbury University softball team off to a winning start in Friday's doubleheader against Stevenson University, blasting a solo home run to left field. The junior also hit a three-run homer in the top of the fifth inning helping the Sea Gulls to an 8-0 victory in six innings in game one.
SU went on to win the second game, 8-2, to improve its Capital Athletic Conference record to a perfect 4-0.
In game one, Salisbury (21-5, 4-0 CAC) put its second run on the scoreboard as junior Hannah Mills started off the second inning with a single up the middle. Mills moved into scoring position after sophomore Harley Hill laid down a sacrifice bunt. Mills advanced to third on a wild pitch. Senior Casey Zaino brought Mills home with her team-leading fourth sacrifice fly of the season.
Senior pitcher Erika Brittingham (12-3) kept the Mustangs off the bases until walking Lisa Bilski in the fourth inning, however, with the help of junior Michelle Gravdahl and Mills, the duo caught Bilski stealing second to end the inning.
SU increased its lead to 5-0 in the fifth inning with Alpaugh's three-run home run, her third of the season and second of the game.
Brittingham helped her own cause in the top of the sixth, driving her fourth homer of the year out to right-center field. The Sea Gulls would bring in two more runs off the bats of juniors Lindsay McCabe and Lindsay Brown, giving SU an 8-0 edge.
Six innings would prove to be all Salisbury needed in game one as Brittingham iced the final three batters. Brittingham collected her 12th win of the season and third no-hitter on the year. The Georgetown, Del., native struck out 10 of the 19 batters she faced.
The second game was more of the same as the Gulls jumped to a 2-0 lead in the first inning.
Brittingham hit her second home run, and fourth maroon and gold homer of the day, in the third inning to lead Salisbury 3-0 over the Mustangs. Brittingham batted 4-for-6, hitting two solo shots with three RBIs and two runs scored.
Freshman pitcher Rachel Johnson took the circle for game two where she pitched five innings. Johnson allowed one hit late in the contest while striking out eight Mustang batters. Sophomore Kathryn Larson came in as relief in the sixth inning.
Stevenson's (8-14, 0-2 CAC) best scoring opportunity came in the bottom of the sixth inning, with bases loaded and no outs. The Mustangs managed one run off the bat of Bilski but could not break through Salisbury's defense as it remained composed and made the necessary plays to get out of the jam, keeping the score 8-1.
With the win, Johnson picked up her eighth victory to improve to 8-2.
Alpaugh ended the doubleheader going 4-for-5, with two home runs, five RBIs and four runs scored.
Salisbury will now head to Frostburg State University where it will face the Bobcats in a CAC doubleheader on Saturday, March 31. First pitch is scheduled for 12 p.m.
