Box Score 2 FROSTBURG, Md. – The No. 20 Salisbury University softball team snapped Frostburg State University's four-game Capital Athletic Conference winning streak as the Sea Gulls swept the Bobcats, 10-1 in five innings, and 11-2 in six.
Salisbury (23-5, 6-0 CAC) earned the first run of game one by the way of junior Lindsay Brown, who hit a shot to right field, bringing home classmate Hannah Mills from second base. Frostburg (12-12, 4-2 CAC) quickly retaliated, scoring in the bottom of the second inning, to even the score, 1-1.
The Sea Gulls' bats came alive, batting around the order, in the third inning to score seven runs off eight hits.
Junior Chelsea Brooks and sophomore Harley Hill both started the inning off with singles, putting runners on first and second base. Brooks and Hill each advanced a base when junior Sarah Alpaugh put down a sacrifice bunt. Salisbury then hit four consecutive singles, good for four runs. Brown was walked before Brooks entered the batter's box for the second time in the inning, where she hit a single to right field, collecting two RBIs. Hill finished off the scoring, knocking in Brown to lead the Gulls an 8-1 lead over the Bobcats.
Senior Casey Zaino added to the maroon and gold's lead in the fourth inning with a blast to right field plating freshman Angela Malgieri and Mills.
In the circle for SU was senior Erika Brittingham (13-3) who, after giving up one run in the second inning, did not give up another for the remainder of the game. Brittingham worked all five innings for the Gulls allowing five hits while striking out eight Bobcats.
In game two, freshman pitcher Rachel Johnson started in the circle. The hurler pitched three perfect innings before the Bobcats got their first hit in the fourth inning by Taylor Vandegrift.
It was Salisbury which would score first in the second game off the bat of Brittingham (4-for-7). SU would fill the bases and walk a run in as junior Lindsay McCabe stayed patient in the batter's box, collecting an RBI.
Sophomore Molly Gigioli led off the second inning, hitting her first homer as a Sea Gull to advance Salisbury's lead, 3-0.
The Sea Gulls would go on to score five-straight runs to bring the tally to 8-0 before Frostburg scores two runs in the fourth inning, making it 8-2.
Mills led off the sixth inning hitting her eighth homer of the season, moving her to eighth on the Salisbury career home run list, one blast away from tying Lauren Brenneman, who currently sits seventh with 18 homers. Zaino followed Mills' solo shot with one of her own, her first of the season, to increase Salisbury's lead to 11-2.
Johnson (9-2) went all six innings for the Gulls, allowing two runs on five hits while striking out six Bobcats.
Zaino had a career day matching her career-best three RBIs, two runs and three hits. The Pine Hill, N.J., native went 5-for-6 with six RBIs and scoring three runs on the day. Hill went 5-for-9, touching home twice and adding one RBI.
Salisbury will be back in action next Saturday, April 7, as it continues in CAC doubleheader action at the University of Mary Washington. First pitch is scheduled for 12:30 p.m.
