Mills hits grand slam in sweep of Lynchburg

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

SALISBURY, Md. – The No. 9 Salisbury University softball team picked up two wins on Thursday afternoon sweeping Lynchburg College, 9-0, in five innings of play and then 4-1 in seven.

Salisbury (7-3) took the lead in the second inning of the first game off the bat of senior Casey Zaino, who then scored the second run of the day off a double by sophomore Harley Hill. The Sea Gulls' bats came alive in the bottom of the third, scoring seven runs on six hits and batting around the lineup.

Sophomore Sarah Alpaugh started the inning off with a single through the left side followed by a single from junior Michelle Gravdahl. Starting pitcher Erika Brittingham was then walked to load the bases. Junior Lindsay Brown pushed the first run of the inning across, as she reached on a fielder's choice as Lynchburg (4-7) second baseman Kacey Clary threw home, but Alpaugh beat her throw, adding a run to the board.

The Sea Gulls once again found bases loaded as junior Hannah Mills stepped into the box. Mills drove her first home run of the season, a grand slam, over the left field fence clearing the bases and bringing the score to 7-0. Salisbury scored two additional runs by the way of Gravdahl and sophomore Molly Gigioli.

Brittingham (5-2) had a slow start, but found her groove in the second inning striking out the first three batters throughout the next three innings. The Georgetown, Del., native went all five innings allowing one hit, two walks and striking out six batters.

Freshman pitcher Rachel Johnson (1-1) took the mound for game two, earning her first win as a Sea Gull while striking out the first four batters she faced. Johnson allowed one run in the contest, off four hits, while stinging the Hornets with 10 strikeouts.

The maroon and gold took a 1-0 lead in the first inning and never looked back. The Sea Gulls took advantage of two Hornet errors in the second inning, and one in the fifth, to score three additional runs.

Brown went 2-for-5 at the plate driving home two runs while Gravdahl went 3-for-4 with one run driven in and scoring twice.

Salisbury will next host 12 teams at the Henry Parker Complex for the Sea Gull Classic that begins tomorrow, Friday, March 9. The event is scheduled to be played over two days. The Gulls will first take on Washington & Jefferson College at 2 p.m., and then Susquehanna University at 4 p.m., on Friday.
