Brittingham pitches no-hitter in day one of Sea Gull Classic

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

SALISBURY, Md. – Senior Erika Brittingham pitched her first no-hitter of the season in the first day of the Sea Gull Classic against Susquehanna University as the No. 9 Salisbury University softball team went 2-0, defeating both Washington & Jefferson College and Susquehanna University, 6-0.

To start the day, sophomore Kathryn Larson took the mound for the Gulls. Larson successfully kept the Presidents off the board for four innings, striking out three batters before freshman Rachel Johnson stepped in for the final three innings.

Johnson struck out the first two batters and then caught a pop up to end the fifth inning.

The score remained tied at zero heading into the top of the sixth. Junior Michelle Gravdahl was walked to put a runner on first and then bumped to second by sophomore Molly Gigioli's sacrifice bunt. Junior Hannah Mills was patient at the plate and with a full count drove her first home run of the day out to left field, putting the maroon and gold up 2-0. Salisbury (9-3) would score once more to end the inning.

In the top of the seventh inning, Salisbury found the bases loaded as senior Casey Zaino entered the batter's box, driving a shot to the Presidents' second baseman Stephanie Zur, scoring junior Sarah Alpaugh. The final two runs of the game were scored off of the bat of junior Lindsay McCabe, who doubled to left field.

Johnson (2-1) collected her second win, striking out six of the 10 batters she faced in three innings of play.

In the second game of the day, Brittingham went all seven inning, striking out 10 Crusaders in her first no-hitter of the season.

The Sea Gulls struck first in the bottom of the second inning as Mills hit a solo home run, her second of the day.

The one run would prove to be all that the maroon and gold would need to earn the win but Salisbury scored twice in the third inning and brought three additional runs across the plate in the fourth inning to bring the final score to 6-0.

Gravdahl went 3-for-5 on the day, scoring twice and driving in one run while Mills went 3-for-6, crossing home three times and driving home four runs.

Salisbury will return to the Henry Parker Complex tomorrow, Saturday, March 10, to wrap up the Sea Gull Classic. The Sea Gulls will take the field first against D'Youville College at 12 p.m., followed by Wilkes University at 2 p.m.
