Brittingham tosses fourth no-hitter of season; Sea Gulls clinch top seed in CAC tournament

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

SALISBURY, Md. – The No. 20 Salisbury University softball team captured the top seed in the upcoming Capital Athletic Conference tournament with a CAC doubleheader sweep against Wesley College on Tuesday at the SU Softball Field. The Sea Gulls claimed both games in five innings, 15-0 and 8-0.

Senior pitcher Erika Brittingham twirled her fourth no-hitter of the season in the first game, striking out nine and allowing just a second-inning walk to keep her from the perfect game.

Salisbury picked up all the offense the Georgetown, Del., native would need in the first inning bringing a pair of runs home on a Brittingham double to center field scoring junior Michelle Gravdahl and sophomore Harley Hill.

The Sea Gulls sent 16 batters to the plate in the third inning, scoring 11 times on six hits and taking advantage of three Wolverine errors to open up a 13-0 lead.

Two more runs in the third capped the game's scoring as Brittingham retired the final 12 batters she faced. She also finished the game 2-for-3 with a pair of doubles and drove in four runs.

Freshman pitcher Rachel Johnson picked up where Brittingham left off in game two, allowing just one hit and three walks in four innings of work to earn the win, her 11th of the season. Johnson struck out nine in the four innings, including seven straight at one point.

The Sea Gulls (27-5, 10-0 CAC) put up a pair of runs in the second inning. Junior Lindsay McCabe brought home classmate Hannah Mills with the first run of the game on a sacrifice fly and a line single to center field by junior Chelsea Brooks allowed senior Casey Zaino to come home for a 2-0 lead.

Wesley (13-16-1, 1-9 CAC) committed four errors in the third inning, coupled with four Salisbury hits the Sea Gulls stretched their lead to 7-0. The big blow in the inning was a two-run blast to left field off the bat of Gravdahl beginning the inning's scoring.

Salisbury added the eighth run in the fourth inning and sophomore Kathryn Larson entered the circle for the top of the fifth, giving up one walk, but a double play started by Mills at shortstop ended the threat and the game.

Mills was 3-for-3 at the plate to lead Salisbury's offensive attack in the second game, scoring twice.

As the top seed in the CAC tournament, Salisbury will host games on Tuesday, April 17, against the No. 6 seed and another game on Thursday, April 19, against an opponent to be determined. With a win in either game, the SU Softball Field would play host to the remaining teams in the double-elimination tournament on Saturday and Sunday, April 21 and 22.

Salisbury will be back in action on Wednesday, April 11, as the Sea Gulls travel to take on Washington (Md.) College in a doubleheader slated to begin at 3 p.m.
