Sea Gulls pick up two wins on road at Washington College

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

CHESTERTOWN, Md. – The No. 18 Salisbury University softball team earned two wins to stretch its winning streak to 19 games, sweeping Washington College, 10-1 and 5-0, on Wednesday afternoon.

Washington (15-14) would score first in game one but its lead would not last long as Salisbury put a run of its own on the scoreboard in the top of the second inning. Senior Erika Brittingham singled down the left-field line, advancing to second on a Shorewomen error, before ending up on third base due to a wild pitch. Junior Hannah Mills brought home Brittingham with a single up the middle to even the score, 1-1.

Salisbury (29-5) broke the tie in the top of the third inning after junior Chelsea Brooks was hit by a pitch and then advanced to second after the Shorewomen failed to pick off Brooks due to a throwing error by Kylie Nottingham. Brooks scored the game-winning run off junior Michelle Gravdahl's single to left field.

Brittingham started in the circle and was relieved after giving up one run on three hits and walking three batters. Freshman Rachel Johnson took over in the bottom of the third where she struck out two batters with one fly out to end the inning.

SU would go on to score three runs off four hits in the fourth, scoring one run with bases loaded as Johnson (1-for-2, 4 RBI) was walked to earn her first career RBI.

Junior Lindsay McCabe just missed hitting her second home run of the season in the fifth inning as the ball hit the top of the fence in left field, good for a double. To end the inning, Salisbury added one run upping its lead to 6-1. SU scored four runs in the seventh for the final margin.

Johnson (12-2) picked up the win in the circle, pitching five innings, fanning five batters and allowing one hit.

The second game proved to be a battle of the pitchers as sophomore Kathryn Larson (2-0) and Washington's Kristin Cooper kept batters off balance and out of scoring position with just two hits apiece going into the fourth inning.

McCabe started things off for the Gulls in the fourth with a walk followed by Brooks' single to center field, putting runners on first and second. Junior Carly Read singled to center field, bringing the winning run across the plate, giving Salisbury the 1-0 edge.

Larson pitched five innings before being relieved by Johnson. The sophomore struck out down six Shorewomen while allowing three hits.

Washington had its best chance at evening the game at 1-1 in the sixth inning with two outs and Suzanne Patinella on second base. Knottingham drove the ball to right-center field but junior Sarah Alpaugh made the snag to keep the Gulls ahead going into the seventh where Salisbury blew the game open, scoring four runs on five hits.

Johnson finished off the game, picking up her first save of the season while Larson notched her second win.

Brooks went 4-for-6 with three RBIs and added two runs scored while McCabe went 3-for-6 with two doubles and a sacrifice bunt, scoring three times and driving in two runs.

SU will be back in action on Saturday, April 14, against Capital Athletic Conference rival York (Pa.) College. The doubleheader will be the last regular-season CAC matchup of the year and is scheduled for 1 p.m.
