No. 3 Salisbury tops Stevenson, 5-3

Box Score

SALISBURY, Md. – Senior Chris Connor went 2-for-2 with two doubles, two walks and two runs driven in to lead the No. 3 Salisbury University baseball team to a 5-3 win over Stevenson University in Capital Athletic Conference action at the SU Baseball Field on Friday.

Sophomore Bill Root broke a 3-3 tie in the bottom of the sixth inning with an RBI double to left-center field with two outs to score classmate Johnny Schiotis, and the bullpen trio of Bill Morton, Matt Beck and Stephen Miller shut the door on the Mustangs. Miller worked a perfect ninth for his fourth save of the season.

Right-hander Jeff Hoffman (6-0) pitched a scoreless sixth inning to earn the win in relief of Andrew Levy.

Salisbury (26-4, 13-3 CAC) scored first in the bottom of the second inning, taking a 1-0 lead on a RBI groundout by Eric Weiser. Kyle Hayman drew a one-out walk from Stevenson starter Ryan Kellough (1-4), stole second and advanced to third on a balk before scoring on Weiser's bouncer to shortstop.

Stevenson (18-15-2, 8-8) responded with two runs in the top of the third to take the lead. Brad Blum beat out a bases-loaded roller to short that scored Heath Johnson, and Josh Morris followed with a sacrifice fly to left to make it 2-1.

The Sea Gulls matched the Mustangs' pair with two in their half of the inning. Connor ripped a two-out double – his seventh of the season – to right-center field, plating Tyler Bennett and Joey Jones, for a 3-2 edge.

Stevenson tied it in the top of the fourth when Zac Stavish scored on a Jordan Wright grounder.

SU added an insurance run in the eighth when Nick Walls scored on a Jones sacrifice fly.

Kellough took the loss for the Mustangs in 5 2/3 innings. He allowed four runs on 10 hits and four walks with one strikeout.

Stavish paced a group of three Mustangs with two hits, going 2-for-4 with a pair of doubles and a run scored.

The teams close the series with a doubleheader on Saturday beginning at 1 p.m.
