SU falls to Frostburg State in CAC tournament, 9-7; faces York Saturday at 9 a.m.

Box Score

SALISBURY, Md. – Frostburg State University scored five runs in the third inning to erase a 2-1 lead for No. 3 Salisbury University and held off a late charge to defeat the Sea Gulls, 9-7, in the second round of Capital Athletic Conference tournament at the SU Baseball Field on Friday.

The top-seeded Sea Gulls (27-7) will play No. 2-seeded York (Pa.) College in an elimination game Saturday at 9 a.m. The Spartans fell to fifth-seeded Wesley College, 15-5, on Friday. The win for the third-seeded Bobcats (20-15) propels them into a third-round matchup with fifth-seeded Stevenson University, which eliminated No. 6-seed St. Mary's (Md.) College, 12-11, earlier Friday.

Against Frostburg State, sophomore Ken O'Neill went 3-for-5 with a triple, four RBIs and a run scored and classmate Bill Root was 3-for-6 with an RBI, a run and stolen base to lead Salisbury. O'Neill's three hits and four RBIs tied career highs.

The Sea Gulls twice rallied to within one run at 6-5 and 8-7 but weren't able to draw even.

SU scored single runs in the first and second innings to take the lead. Chris Connor hit a sacrifice fly to center with one out in the first, scoring Root and O'Neill singled up the middle after the first of two Nick Walls doubles for the lead.

Adam Summerfelt's two-run double down the left field line highlighted the Bobcats' third-inning surge. The hit, coming with two men out, spelled the end of the day for senior right-hander Jeff Hoffman (6-1) and made it 5-2. Danny Druzgala came on and surrendered a run-scoring double to Mike Virbickis before getting Adam Baxley swinging to end the inning.

Salisbury trimmed the lead to 6-5 with three runs in the fourth. With runners on second and third and one out, O'Neill lined a triple to right field, plating Johnny Schiotis and Kyle Hayman. Root followed, beating out a roller to shortstop that allowed O'Neill to score.

Frostburg State scored two unearned runs in the top of the sixth after a pair of errors to push the lead to 8-5, but Salisbury got one back in the bottom of the inning on another O'Neill single to score Walls.

Joey Jones scored SU's final run of the game in the seventh, to make it 8-7 when Hayman legged out a hit to third base with two outs. Jones walked to lead off the frame and moved to scoring position when Connor reached on an error before advancing to third on a fly ball.

Zach O'Dell (7-2) earned the win in six innings on the mound. He allowed six runs on nine hits and a walk while striking out four. Hoffman took the loss, allowing six runs on six hits in 2 2/3 innings. Tristen Beyer picked up his first save, pitching the final 1 1/3 innings, allowing two hits and two walks with two strikeouts.

Shane Boyd paced the FSU offense, going 3-for-4 with three runs scored and one driven in. Summerfelt and Virbickis drove in a pair of runs each.
